Cabling exists for one situation: a tree you want to keep that has a structural defect likely to fail. It is not a general strengthening treatment and it does not make a tree storm-proof — it reduces the probability of a specific failure in a specific union.

The defect it is for

Co-dominant stems with included bark. Two stems of roughly equal size grow up pressed against each other, bark gets trapped in the union instead of the wood fusing, and the joint is weak from the day it forms.

The species this shows up on around here most often are silver maple, Bradford pear, river birch, and elm — the fast-growing, weak-wooded trees planted heavily through the second half of the last century.

Placement is everything

A cable goes high in the canopy, well above the defect, typically around two-thirds of the distance from the union to the branch ends. Too low and it does nothing; over-tightened and it transfers stress somewhere else.

Bracing rods pass through the union itself and resist the split directly. On a serious defect the two are used together rather than one instead of the other.

It is a system you maintain

Hardware needs periodic inspection. Trees grow, cables slacken, and hardware can become engulfed by growing wood. A support system installed twenty years ago and never checked is not doing what the owner assumes it is.

Plan on inspection every few years and after major storms. The ISA treats support systems the same way — ongoing risk reduction, not a repair.

When we say no

Hardware anchored into decayed wood is not doing anything useful. If there is significant rot in the union or a hollow stem, cabling gives false confidence rather than genuine support.

Over a house we are conservative about that judgement, and we would rather lose the job than install hardware that lets someone stop worrying about a tree they should be worrying about.

Common questions

Will cabling stop my tree from splitting?

It reduces the likelihood meaningfully. It does not eliminate it. Anyone guaranteeing a living tree in a windstorm is overselling.

Does it damage the tree?

Installed correctly the tree compartmentalises around the hardware and lives with it fine. Installed badly — wrapped chains, bolts through decay — it causes harm.

How much does it cost compared with removal?

Usually considerably less than removing a large mature tree, which is much of why it is worth considering. Access and canopy height drive the price.

My Bradford pear is splitting. Worth cabling?

Sometimes, on a younger tree you value. Bradford pear has a structural habit that trends toward failure regardless, and we will be candid about the odds before you spend.
