Tree Disease and Pest Diagnosis in Frankfort, KY

Most declining trees we are called to look at in Franklin County do not have a disease. They have an injury, a site problem, or a planting mistake — and no spray addresses any of those. Diagnosis first is the difference between fixing a tree and funding a treatment programme that cannot work.

Start at the root flare

The base of the trunk answers a surprising share of tree questions. A healthy tree flares outward where it meets the ground. If yours goes into the soil straight, like a post, it is either planted too deep or buried by grade change and mulch — and that alone will kill a tree slowly over a decade.

Girdling roots, where a root circles the stem and strangles it, show at the same place. Both are correctable if caught, and neither responds to anything sprayed on the leaves.

Injuries that look like illness

  • Planted too deep, or mulch piled against the trunk
  • String trimmer and mower damage around the base
  • Soil compaction and root severing from construction
  • Grade changes that buried or exposed the root zone
  • Drought stress on a shallow-soil site
  • Salt exposure near a treated drive or roadway

Actual pests and diseases we see in Franklin County

When it genuinely is a pathogen or an insect, there is a fairly predictable local list.

Sometimes nothing should be done

Sycamore anthracnose looks alarming in May and the tree releafs. Japanese beetle damage in July is ugly and rarely threatens an established tree. Neither warrants a treatment programme.

Where laboratory confirmation is genuinely warranted, Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension system and the UK Department of Entomology provide diagnostic services, and we will tell you when a case calls for it.

Common questions

Should I put my trees on a spray programme?

Only for a diagnosed problem with a known treatment window. Calendar spraying with no target is money spent on nothing and it is hard on pollinators and beneficial insects.

My tree has been declining for years with no obvious cause.

Look at the root flare and at what changed on the site in the last decade. Slow multi-year decline is far more often a root or site problem than a disease.

Is the diagnosis visit free?

Yes. If a case warrants laboratory confirmation through the state diagnostic system, we will tell you before anything is submitted.

Can a tree with leaf scorch be cured?

Bacterial leaf scorch is managed rather than cured. Reducing other stress helps; planning for eventual replacement is the realistic long view.
