Two things worth doing before you call anyone
Photograph the tree from a few angles including the base and the root flare — a good share of what we need to know is at ground level, not up in the canopy. And if there is a power line anywhere in the picture, call your utility before you call a tree company.
When to do what
Removals can happen any time of year. Structural pruning on most species is best in the dormant season when the framework is visible and the tree is not pushing growth. Oaks are generally best pruned outside the active growing season. Storm work happens when the storm does.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property?
For a tree on private residential property, generally no. Trees in a right-of-way, on commercial sites under a development plan, or governed by an HOA can differ. Check locally if in doubt.
My neighbour’s tree fell on my property. Who pays?
A legal question more than a tree question. It commonly turns on whether the tree was visibly hazardous beforehand and whether the owner had been told. If you are worried about a specific tree, document its condition in writing now.
Can I cut branches hanging over my line?
Generally you may trim to the property line, but the tree remains your neighbour’s and you can be liable for harming it. Talking to them first is a better outcome than the alternative.
Why are hillside removals more expensive?
Equipment cannot reach, so it becomes a climb-and-rig job with every piece lowered by rope, plus a harder haul-out. See hillside tree removal.
How long does a removal take?
A straightforward yard tree is usually a few hours. A large tree over a house, or anything on a steep slope, can be a full day or more.
Will you tear up my lawn?
Heavy equipment on soft ground leaves marks. We use mats and plywood where it matters and will tell you in advance if the lawn is going to take some wear.
What happens to the wood?
Whatever you want — cut to rounds and left, chipped on site, or hauled away. Each prices differently.
Is my ash tree worth treating?
If it still has most of its canopy, possibly. If it has lost the top third, generally not. See emerald ash borer.
Do you work through the winter?
Yes, and dormant season is often the best time for structural pruning and for removals where you want minimal impact on the lawn.
