When is the best time to prune in Kentucky?

When should trees be pruned here?
Late winter dormancy suits most hardwoods in Franklin County — wounds close quickly and the whole structure is visible without foliage.
Dormant work is easier to do well and easier on the tree. The canopy is readable, the ground is usually firm, and the cuts begin closing as soon as growth resumes in spring.
Oak is the species to time deliberately, because a growing-season cut coincides with the beetles that move oak wilt. Storm-damaged limbs, by contrast, are dealt with whenever they appear — a hanging limb does not wait for a season.
What pruning actually achieves
Good pruning removes deadwood, corrects structure and clears buildings. It does not make a large tree into a small one.
The realistic goals are clearance from a roof or drive, removal of dead and crossing limbs, and correction of weak unions before they become failures. A tree that is genuinely too large for its spot cannot be pruned into a smaller tree — repeated hard cutting just produces weak regrowth and a worse problem in a decade.
Where a canopy does need real reduction, staging it over two seasons keeps the tree healthy while getting to the same result.
Common questions
Do you top trees?
No. Topping strips the natural branch structure, opens decay at every stub, and the regrowth that follows is weakly attached — it makes storm failure more likely, not less.
How much can come off in one visit?
As a working rule, not much beyond a quarter of the live canopy on a mature tree. Beyond that you are trading the tree’s health for a single afternoon’s appearance.
Will pruning stop limbs dropping on my roof?
Proper clearance pruning removes the limbs that overhang and the deadwood most likely to fall. It reduces the risk substantially; no pruning eliminates it entirely.
