Why grind a stump?
Left in place, stumps attract termites and carpenter ants, sprout new shoots, and block replanting. Grinding removes the stump 4–6 inches below grade so the spot can be reused.
How deep does a stump get ground?
Six to twelve inches below grade covers most jobs. Anything that will later be built on or paved over needs to go deeper.
The end use decides the depth. Reseeding a lawn is the shallow case. A patio, shed base or driveway extension is the deep one, and the void then wants soil rather than chips, because chips keep settling as they rot.

Common questions
Can you reach a stump on a steep bank?
Usually, though it changes the method. Steep positions may need the machine winched or repositioned several times, and we will say up front if a stump is genuinely unreachable rather than guess at it.
Do the chips stay or go?
Your choice. Left in place they backfill the hole and settle over a season; hauled away, we bring soil in instead if you want to plant straight over the top.
How soon can I reseed?
Once the hole is backfilled and topped with soil, straight away. Reseeding directly into raw chips rarely takes — they hold nitrogen as they decompose.
